Last Friday night I was driving my son to the pizza parlor when I received a call on my cell phone. A fellow by the name of Brett informs me that I have been “selected” to receive one-on-one coaching for my website by a team of top notch advisors who work for the creator of one of the web courses I recently purchased.
It gets better.
They want to work exclusively with me. The cost? When (not if) I am successful, I provide a stellar recommendation for the team of top-notch advisors who “took me under their wing.” No talk about cost or obligation.
So, what do I think?
I tell my new friend Brett that it is Friday night, I am in the car and I really can’t discuss this outstanding offer. We agree that Brett will call me at 1:00 P.M. the next day to further discuss his incredible, generous proposal.
I clear my calendar after 1:00 P.M. on Saturday for my call with Brett. He calls me right on time and is ready to discuss the plan. He makes it very clear that “the man” I need to convince is a fellow by the name of Travis. In order to get to Travis, I have to get past Brett. So Brett is going to give me the low down on what will be expected of me, the “quid pro quo”, before I can talk to “the man” himself.
First and foremost, I have to be committed to providing both the time and the energy to this endeavor. I need to be willing to work 5-10 hours a week and I need to have the desire to be successful. No worries there. In order to be successful, I WILL be committed and energetic. After all, I am being given the keys to the kingdom and the price is certainly right. Right?
Now we get to the most interesting part of the conversation. How are my finances? Specifically, what does my credit card debt look like?
Credit card debt?! I don’t get it (am I some sort of dummy?).
Brett tells me that my commitment has to be absolute. If I am good at following orders (which I confirmed earlier) I have to be willing to spend some money. If not, the advice rings hollow and I will be unsuccessful.
Okay. So my new found friend, the guy who is going to get me in to meet the “wizard”, wants to know if I can come up with some dough for this venture. In other words, crying poverty is not an option. The old adage, “you have to spend money to make money” is ringing loud and clear.
Well, I think to myself, I already have a host and software for my site, and I am getting free advice from a group of world class advisors, how much more would I need? I have oodles of credit in my cards to pull this off, so I am ready for the next level. Again, it is not costing me anything other than a glowing endorsement (I don’t really know these guys, but I love them!).
Okay, Okay, Brett is convinced I have what it takes, he is ready for his discussion with the “big guy” Travis. I have to let him pitch my worthiness and, if he convinces Travis, I just might get that all important phone call in the next ten minutes. My fate is sealed, my confidence is soaring.
The price is right. I only have to be willing to tell the world know how successful these advisors made me. I think that I just won the damn lottery! I wait for Travis’ call……..
